Chess Heights Ondo Returns in Style: David Oyakhilome Wins July Edition

July 19, 2025

Rising stars, seasoned masters, and a fresh chess spirit light up Ondo’s newest monthly battleground.

The July edition of Chess Heights Ondo launched with promise, passion, and packed boards as players gathered for what looks to become a staple in the state’s chess calendar.

At the heart of the drama was David Oyakhilome, who clinched victory in a hotly contested field that included emerging talent, Olime David Ikponmwosa coming clear second and David Oyakhilome’s twin, Daniel Oyakhilome—in third place.

The event showcased the diversity of Nigeria’s chess strength: from titled players to breakout competitors hungry for experience wins. One major highlight was the participation of CM Akinseye Akinleye, popularly known as CM Akinov the Adult Prodigy, whose presence added extra weight to the tournament’s credibility and competitiveness.

The Champion’s Moment

David Oyakhilome emerged victorious after six intense rounds, navigating a tough field with composure and consistent play. His final-round victory over Hammed Oladimeji sealed the top spot, leaving spectators impressed with both his form and focus.

Tying for second place the lesser-known but now unforgettable Olime, David Ikponmwosa, who stunned fans with his fearless play and victory over a well-established opponent during the event with Daniel Oyakhilome in third place.

Spotlight: CM Akinov Reflects on the Event

CM Akinseye Akinleye (CM Akinov), known for his calm demeanor and deep chess understanding, didn’t hold back in his praise for the tournament:

“The level of competition was fierce. 50 percent of the participants were FIDE rated and active chess players,”

he noted.

On his standout game:

“My last game in round 6 against Oyakhilome Daniel stood out. I played with a different mindset. If I adopt this mindset moving forward, I believe I can get my mojo back and compete strongly with any top player in Nigeria.”

Despite not preparing specifically for the event, CM Akinov valued the experience:

“I relied on residual knowledge and chess principles. I had 3 wins and 3 losses, but I was happy with all my games.”

On how the event supports grassroots growth:

“This kind of event is a great stimulant for upcoming players in the state. Over time, it will yield bigger results.”

His biggest takeaway:

“If I work on my game and change my mindset to play against the board instead of the player, I can beat anyone or everyone here and in the country.

Good moves win games.”

Looking ahead:

“Surely I will be in the next edition. I encourage other players to get set for tough battles ahead.”

Spotlight: Olime’s Breakout Performance

Olime David (left) stunned the event with a strong showing coming clear Second.

A quiet name before the tournament, Olime David Ikponmwosa turned heads with a strong performance, playing just his third FIDE-rated OTB event. His victory over the established field of player added spice to his narrative.

Reflecting on his performance:

“I just did my best. One cannot always be fully prepared because, as in chess as in life, we always face different circumstances. I’m glad the little I could do paid off.”

Asked how it felt to be part of the tournament, he responded:

“It feels refreshing each time. The experiences from the preceding FIDE-rated events always seem to complement the succeeding ones.”

On his motivation and mindset:

“What keeps me motivated is that there will always be opportunities to show one’s worth, hence I don’t beat myself if I can’t go to a planned event.”

On the learning value:

“The previous one compared to this was more of a real testing ground for me. I was more open to learning—not really about winning. These events are there to sharpen one’s fortitude in chess.”

Asked what he’s currently working on:

“I’m not working on any part of my game LOL. I’m only watching Netflix currently.”

Planned tournaments?

“None really, since I am somewhat in a tilt.”

Still, his ambition is clear:

“I see myself very far in the chess-verse. Subsequent events like this will add to my experience in OTB Chess.”

Looking Ahead: Chess Heights Ondo Returns next in August

With its successful debut return, Chess Heights Ondo is set to resume again next month, promising even fiercer competition, better organization, and a stronger chess community. The tournament is not just a testing ground for ratings—it’s becoming a proving ground for Nigeria’s next generation of talent.

Whether it’s the seasoned presence of CM Akinov, the steady presence of the acclaimed ‘Strange brothers’, David and Daniel Oyakhilome, or the rise of a newcomer like Olime, Chess Heights Ondo has already proven one thing: the future of chess in Ondo is very bright.
